Working towards an active collecting

May 15, 2018

The MAC LAU’s museum status, obtained in 2014, represented the culmination of work begun over 10 years ago. The museum’s demographic context, size, new designation, focus, and management all have an influence on its art policy. Thus, a committee is currently working on the MAC LAU’s artistic statement, beginning with what constitutes an art museum’s aesthetic and political responsibility. Using this vision statement as its starting point, the MAC LAU will revise its field of action and the focus of its collection, as well as work towards a harmonized vision of collecting and disseminating. It is important to examine the concept of the contract that links the institution to the artist, gallery owner, and collector. The MAC LAU will also review its modes of acquisition through this lens.

In July 2019, the MAC LAU posted information about its collection on "DONNÉES QUÉBEC Le carrefour collaboratif en données ouvertes québécoises" platform, the first museum, outside of state museums, to participate. We are very pleased to share this information and to collaborate in the advancement of research in the field of Quebec museology and statistics. An interesting resource to discover! (In French only)

The main mission of the Musée d’art contemporain des Laurentides is to showcase, share and promote the works of visual artists. Towards this vision, the museum collects, preserves, exhibits and documents artworks with a particular emphasis on contemporary art. The MAC LAU acquires, on a regular basis, a growing collection of print and audiovisual works and media reflective of the visual arts practices of the Laurentians, allowing for the continued documentation, preservation, research, exhibition and interpretation of these works. The MAC LAU carefully evaluates all artworks donation submissions.
